Planet Watch -- January 2012

Mercury will be visible over the southeastern horizon before sunrise for the first couple of weeks this month. It quickly moves east toward the Sun and superior conjunction next month.
Venus is very visible shining brightly over the southwestern horizon at sunset.

Mars rises before midnight local time and is visible throughout the night hours and is still visible over the southwestern horizon at sunrise.
The 'red planet' begins retrorgade motion toward the end of the month. Click here to see a table showing the coordinate positions and distance from Earth during the retrograde motion period.

Jupiter is visible high above the south horizon at sunset and is visible the rest of the night hours.
Saturn rises a couple of hours after midnight local time and is visible high above the southeastern horizon at sunrise.
