Welcome to this issue of
Qué tal in the Current Skies

Here you will find useful observing information about the visible planets, our Moon and other moons, the Sun, as well as various 'things' celestial. Among these web pages you will find monthly star maps for either the northern or southern hemisphere that are suitable for printout. Animated images are utilized to illustrate celestial motions such as orbital motions of the planets, and other solar orbiting objects, or apparent and real motions along the ecliptic and the local horizon. Regular features include plotting the monthly positions of the visible planets using heliocentric coordinates; following - moon phases; conjunctions; Sun's apparent, and Earth's real motion along the ecliptic.

Volume 30          Issue 6
June 2024
   Month at a Glance:

For about the first half of June all of the visible planets, except Venus, will be visible above the eastern horizon before the Sun rises at your local time. On June 3rd the planets will be arranged, not aligned, from east to west as this graphic shows. Click here to see a view from above the solar system on June 3rd. Realistically Jupiter and Mercury probably may not be visible as they are close to the Sun as the Sun rises.
June is also the month for chaning seasons; spring to summer in the Northern Hemisphere and Autumn to Winter in the Southern Hemisphere. This is more properly known as the June Solstice rather than the Northern Hemisphere biased Summer Solstice.

Mercury is steadily moving eastward toward the Sun and reaching superior conjunction on the 14>sup>th. Then watch for the innermost planet to reappear as an evening planet next month.
Venus joins Mercury at superior conjunction but reaches that orbital point on the 4th, and then re-emerges as an evening planet next month.
Mars is visible as a morning planet amongst the stars of the constellation Aries the Ram as it rises ahead of the Sun.
Dwarf Planet Ceres rises late in the eveninng with the stars of Sagittarius the Archer. With an apparent magnitude of around 7.0 the Dwarf Planet may be visible with binoculars.
Jupiter starts becoming visible as bright morning object amongst the stars of Taurus the Bull.
Saturn is visible as a morning planet amongst the stars of Pices the Fishes, and rising a few hours before the Sun rises.
Uranus is part of the group of visible planets in the morning skies and is in the area of Jupiter in Taurus the Bull.
