Volume 20 -- Issue 7
Planet Watch -- July 2014

Mercury is visible before sunrise through most of the month as it moves out ahead of the Sun until reaching its greatest western elongation on the 12th. Following elongation Mercuery starts moving east toward the Sun and rising closer and closer to the time of sunrise.
Venus is moving eastward toward the Sun and is rising closer to the time of sunrise. As a result Venus is lower above the eastern horizon before sunrise each day and coming closest to Mercury on the morning of the 16th when the two inner planets will be 6-7 degrees apart.

Mars is moving eastward across Virgo and is steadily moving past the star Spica. On the 11th-13th Mars will pass Spica coming within about 1-2 degrees.
Jupiter is lost to the Sun's glare as the two merge (astronomically speaking) as Jupiter moves to the other side of the Sun and solar conjunction on the 24th.
Saturn is visible over the southern to southwestern horizon at sunset and sets around midnight local time.
