Planet Watch -- August 2014

Mercury moves out from behind the Sun and superior conjunction and slowly reappears in the evening skies throughout the month.
Venus is moving eastward toward the Sun and is rising closer to the time of sunrise. As a result Venus is lower above the eastern horizon before sunrise each day and by the end of the month is lost to the glare from the Sun. On the morning of the 18th venus, moving eastward passes within about 1 degree from Jupiter.

Mars stays visible in the evening skies over the southwestern horizon but is gradually setting earlier each evening and is lower above the horizon at sunset as the month progresses. Watch for Mars to catch up with and pass Saturn and the star Zubenelgenubi during the last week or so of the month.
Jupiter reappears in the morning skies and throughout the month becomes more visible as a morning planet.
Saturn stays visible in the evening skies over the southwestern horizon but is gradually setting earlier each evening and is lower above the horizon at sunset as the month progresses..
