Planet Watch -- February 2016

Mercury is visible for the first half of the month at sunrise but it for northern hemisphere observers it is low above the horizon even as it moves westward toward western elongation on the 7th.
Venus continues shining brightly over the eastern horizon before the Sun rises. However Venus, unlike Mercury, is well past its own western elongation and is now steadily moving toward the east and superior conjunction later this year.
Mars rises an hour or so after midnight local time and is visible the rest of the night hours.
Jupiter rises during mid-evening and is very visible high over the southwestern horizon at sunrise.
Saturn rises an hour or so before the Sun rises and is near the star Antares in Scorpius.
